—— Green + white = pink

My art practice seeks to explore the unknown forces that are constantly shaping our lives. I am intrigued by the possibilities of the unknown, the uncanny, and the in-between: the intangible connections that link people, objects, and places together, and how they manifest across space and time. As a ceramicist who emphasizes both interiority and tactility, my work dissects layered ideas of closeness and disruption in order to reveal a nuanced understanding of how we exist in perpetuity with what cannot be seen.

Inspired by my past experiences, childhood memories, and Chinese cultural background, I create immersive environments using clay as a narrative tool. The interactions between physical objects become symbolic representations of the powerful bonds that continue to exist regardless of distance.

Growing up with influences from traditional Chinese watercolor painting, as well as a passion for culinary arts and ceramics, I blend precision with persistence in my creative process. Clay’s unique duality—soft yet substantial, fragile yet eternal—captivates me, making it the core medium of my art practice.

In ceramics, there is a term called “Chrome-Tin Pink.” By combining chrome oxide and tin oxide in different ratios, ceramicists can produce varying shades of pink. By isolating chrome oxide and firing it alongside a tin oxide glaze, a magical transformation occurs: green + white = pink. The color ranges from soft pink to rich burgundy, with intriguing shifts in hue and texture.

I experiment with glazes to express the nuances of human connection and changes in proximity. My fascination with the interaction between chrome oxide and tin oxide continues to inspire me. Through the interplay of color, texture, and chemical reaction during firing, unexpected beauty is revealed. Each piece tells a story of closeness, shifts in perception, and the subtle marks left behind by unseen forces.

Growing up within a Chinese cultural context and later studying and working across China, Canada, and the United States, I have become attentive to how memory and identity travel. My work reflects this movement. It considers how cultural inheritance, personal history, and emotional experience continue to act upon us, even when invisible.

Through material research and sculptural form, I seek to make perceptible the quiet exchanges that shape who we are.
